The ice has been melting this past week because of above normal temperatures. The weather forecast for today called for temperatures to be in the 50's. That is not bad for the first week in January in southern Wisconsin. I talked to some friends and they had decided to start the New Year off with a fishing trip to the Kenosha area to target Brown Trout. There have been large numbers of fish in the harbor and marina's this past fall and the possibility that the warmer weather would make the fish active was too great a temptation.

I arrived at the small boat harbor around 1:30 pm. The air temperature was 45 degrees and a dense fog shrouded the entire harbor. At times the fog was so thick that you could not see the bank on the other side of the harbor. Several friends and other fisherman were already fishing since daybreak. Don, Lee and Carl had been fishing since 8:30. They told me that they had caught a dozen Brown Trout that morning and lost at least half a dozen more fish. Earlier in the day the bite was mainly on tube jigs and spoons. The also stated that the bite had slowed down in the past hour. I asked if anyone had tried using crankbaits and they answered 'not yet'. I started using Kastmaster spoons and after 30 minutes switched to crankbaits. The technique that was the most effective was to cast a shallow diving crank bait then just use a slow retrieve. In 3 hours of fishing I landed seven Brown Trout. The Trout averaged between 3-6 pounds, with the largest fish being a 12 pound female.

This trip was an excellent start for the New Year.
