Fish Scents and Attractants
For all species of Fresh and Saltwater Fish

Fish have left and right nostrils located above their mouths. There are two openings in each nostril. An entrance and exit for water to pass through. Water borne scents flow through the nostrils and are analyzed by numerous scent receptors. These receptors are triggered by different sized molecules of chemicals, pheromones, and hormones. Most fish also have receptors cells located in their mouths. These receptor cells are used for taste.

There are different types of scents. Pheromones are chemicals that are used to communicate danger (fear of predators) and attraction (courtship and mating). Amino acids are chemicals that affect feeding. Amino acids are present in all living organisms. They are used by fish to determine if something is alive. Scientific studies have shown that scents can be detected by salmon in very small amounts. Certain chemicals can be detected at levels of 1 part per million dissolved in water. Spawning salmon can smell or detect their spawning creek or stream from hundreds of miles away. Fishing Scents are used to both attract and mask other objectionable scents.
