Darter Head Jigs rigged with Berkley Power Bait or Gulp Minnows
Darter head jigs rigged with Berkley Power Bait, Gulp or Gulp Alive Minnows have an incredible action when used ice fishing. The unique shape and weight distribution of Owner Darter Head jigs tipped with power bait minnows flutter and spin in circles when jigged below an ice fishing hole. We use a small 3/16 ounce up to a the 1/4 ounce Owner Darter head jigs. Three or Four inch Berkley Power Bait, Gulp or Gulp Alive Minnows are used. Favorite colors include: Smelt, Black Shad, Chartreuse and Pearl White. The jig is tied to a 30 inch fluorocarbon leader from 20 to 40 pound test. The leader is tied to a SPRO PowerIce Fishing for Northern Pike with Darter Head Jigs swivel (size 10). The spinning motion of the jig will cause really bad line twist if you do not use a small swivel. We do rarely experience some bite offs, but will hook many more fish with fluorocarbon leader than using wire leader material. The SPRO Power swivel is tied to your fishing line, we like to use 10 to 12 pound test Power Pro or Spiderwire. Lower the jig into the water and drop the jig to the bottom. Reel up the jig a few feet. Simply raise and twitch the jig, which will cause a darting motion of the jig. After jigging several times, stop and hold the jig in a stable position for about 30 seconds. If you are using a flasher or depth finder and see a fish approach, stop jigging. Most hits will occur when the bait stops and hangs motionless. Set the hook immediately.
